Year 6 Homework Project due in: 7th December

Year 6 Homework Project due in: 7th December

You have five weeks to produce some work based around this term’s topic on Antarctica.

It could be geography, history or science related and can be in any format but must show 5 weeks’ amount of work.

Possible ideas include:

Scrap book about Antarctica – pictures, facts, maps, information

Factual writing about a famous Antarctic explorer

Profiles about Antarctic animals

Create your own Antarctic Survival Kit – draw and write what you would need to take

Create a model with labels and facts

Design a travel brochure on what there is to see and do in Antarctica

Or … (any other ideas? – be creative!)

And have fun!

Classifying ‘Liquorice Allsorts’ using a branching database

In science we have been looking at how classification keys (or branching databases) are used to identify something or decide which group something belongs in. Today we used our skills of sorting and questioning to create our own classification key to group different types of sweets found in a bag of ‘Liquorice Allsorts’.

Have a look to see how successful we were:

Writers Takeover Workshop at Manchester Art Gallery

On Thursday 18th October, Year 6 visited Manchester Art Gallery to take part in the ‘Writers takeover’ workshop.

Part of the workshop taught us how to look at art work and build stories around the images we saw and imagine what was happening just beyond the picture. The children then drew their new imaginary worlds and described them to the rest of the group. The inspiration for these worlds was L.S. Lowry and Adolphe Valette.

The second part of the workshop was to again learn how to look at art closely and ask questions about the images they saw. This led to the children making up their own narrative or poem based on a chosen piece of art work. The inspiration for these stories came from the following works of art:

‘When the West with Evening Glows’ and ‘The Sun Had Closed the Winter Day’ by Joseph Farquharson; ‘A Spate in the Highlands’ by Peter Graham; ‘The Herring Market at Sea (on Loch Fyne, Argyll)’ by Colin Hunter; ‘Portrait of Sir Alexander Keith’ by David Wilkie R.A. and ‘Autumn Leaves’ by Sir J.E. Millais.
